Concerning Familiars

By nickoomba

When a friend told me I had warm hands, she mentioned something about dragons, and I thought she was saying I was one. As much as I like them, I’m not one of those freaks that runs around claiming to be a dragon in human form. She wasn’t talking me being a dragon, just having the characteristics of a dragon because (keeping in mind that she is wiccan) a dragon is myfamiliar. Knowing it was equivalent to a guardian, I was still unsure of the implecations (mostly by lack of definition), so I looked it up.
The familiar–similar to the concept of a jinni in Islam and the guardian angel of Christianity, a familiar is sometimes a servant or guide, usually but not always in the form of an animal. In the days of the witch hunts, anything but beating a dog to death was considered evidence of witchcraft. Then again, what wasn’t in those times?
So then the question was whether or not the dragon was actually my familiar. Since the concept was used in Philop Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” series, I figured that certain animals had certain interpretations. You know I didn’t find any? Well, there was the D&D interpretations, but that game lost all credibility with their attempt at a depiction of Tiamat. So I’m not really sure.
I am sure of one thing, I do lovedragons. If you do a search on WordPress, I have the most dragon-related posts. People always want to know why I love them; I have no real answer, and they just think I’m being an insincere prick when I tell them the truth. I’m not sure I want to know; the mystery is half the fu.
